With the devastation of the May 22 tornado dramatically increasing the numbers of those in need, and the Holidays fast approaching, the team at Carlson Chiropractic Center is taking a new approach to their annual Holiday giving. Turning to their Facebook fans, the Carlson Chiropractic team is asking who people are donating their time, treasure, and talent to, and who could use Carlson’s help. Kicking off Monday, November 21, Carlson Chiropractic is asking for feedback through December 12.
“This is a great way to build conversation and find out which of the many wonderful outreach organizations in Joplin could use an extra hand this year,” Heather Carlson, Director of Operations and Marketing said. “I really think this will not only benefit the organization that we help, but all of the organizations throughout Joplin.”
Carlson feels that many of the 1,200+ Carlson Chiropractic Centers Facebook fans will not only join in the conversation, but also gain new awareness about a church or organization that they could also help. “I really feel like if we work together, we can make a difference. We are a strong community and I know that together we can help our friends and neighbors, and most importantly, the children.”
The Facebook campaign simply asks fans to share the name of their favorite outreach organization, and the organization with the most “likes” or “votes” will receive a $100 check from Carlson Chiropractic Center, just in time for the Holidays. The campaign, as well as a Food Drive in November, and the Salvation Army Angel Tree in their lobby during the Holidays, are just a few of the ways Carlson Chiropractic Center can give back during the Holiday Season.
“It is truly better to give than receive,” Dr. Steven M. Carlson added. “It is always very exciting to see so many of our patients willing to help us help others, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do this year.”
Since 2003 the professionals at Carlson Chiropractic Center have worked with a hands-on approach to health care, committed to bringing each of their patients better health and a better way of life by teaching and practicing the principles of chiropractic wellness care. With a strong focus on prevention, Dr. Steven Carlson and the entire Carlson Chiropractic team are dedicated to helping their patients achieve all of their wellness objectives, assisting them in living life to the fullest!

Carlson Chiropractic Center Hosting Salvation Army Angel Tree to Benefit Area Children During Holiday Season
With the devastation of the May 22 tornado dramatically increasing the numbers of those in need, and the Holidays fast approaching, the team at Carlson Chiropractic Center is pleased to announce that they will be hosting a Salvation Army Angel Tree in their lobby from November 11 – December 9, at their office at 2318 East 32nd, Suite B.
The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program provides new clothing and/or toys to area children. A sponsoring company or organization, like Carlson Chiropractic Center, places a Christmas tree in a high traffic area, and the tree is decorated with Angel Tags with the first name, age, and gender of a child who will receive the gift. Contributors remove one or more tags from the tree and purchase appropriate gifts for the child described on the tags. The gifts are then delivered to the Salvation Army and later picked up by the parent to distribute to the child on Christmas Day.
“This is our second year to host an Angel Tree, and we are excited to do our part to make sure that no child has to wake up to a Christmas morning without a gift,” Dr. Steven M. Carlson said. “It is truly better to give than receive, and last year we had a great response, over 25 Angels needs were meet in our office. It is very exciting to see so many of our patients willing to help others out, and I’m looking forward to participating in this event again this year.”
The Salvation Army will be delivering 16 Angel Trees throughout Joplin and Webb City this year, and according to Lt. Jamie Curry, the trees are placed in areas that will be visible to a cross section of the entire community. “Carlson Chiropractic is just fantastic, they are so helpful and eager to participate.”
“Our theme this year is ‘Your Donation Provides Hope’ and businesses like Carlson Chiropractic are helping us help others,” Lt. Curry said. “Without the many businesses and organizations in the area helping us, we couldn’t do it, there is no possible way we could gather all of these toys. Each participating business and organization is so vital to what we do.”
“Together we can make a difference in the needs that our community is facing this Holiday Season,” Dr. Carlson added. “We need to make sure that we do all that we can to help our community, our friends and neighbors, and most importantly, the children.”
Since 2003 the professionals at Carlson Chiropractic Center have worked with a hands-on approach to health care, committed to bringing each of their patients better health and a better way of life by teaching and practicing the principles of chiropractic wellness care. Carlson Chiropractic Center Hosting Annual Food Drive to Benefit Area Need During Holiday Season
With the devastation of the May 22 tornado dramatically increasing the numbers of those in need, and the Holidays fast approaching, the team at Carlson Chiropractic Center is pleased to announce their upcoming annual Food Drive, scheduled to take place from November 1-11, at their office at 2318 East 32nd, Suite B.
According to Map the Meal Gap: Child Food Insecurity 2011, 28.2 percent (71,780) of children in southwest Missouri face food insecurity. That’s five percent higher than the national rate, meaning more than one in four children don’t know where their next meal is coming from and may go to bed hungry. The study also reveals that of those children, 30 percent do not qualify for free or reduced school meals or WIC. Add that to the thousands left displaced and unemployed after the tornado, and it is apparent that the situation is critical.
“Right here in Joplin, many families are facing a Holiday Season with the question of how they are going to feed their families. We are dedicated to helping with that and that’s why we are asking you to join us and help feed Joplin,” Dr. Steven M. Carlson said. “It is truly better to give than receive and we need to do everything in our power to make sure that no child in Joplin has to go to bed hungry.”
From November 1 through November 11, new patients are invited to a FREE day of initial services at Carlson Chiropractic Center. For a donation of a minimum of 20 canned goods or other non-perishable items, participants can get a FREE consultation, examination, x-rays if needed, and a Report of Findings. An adjustment however, is not included and would need to be scheduled for a different appointment with standard fees applicable. To take part in Carlson Chiropractic Center’s special offer, a person only needs to call their office at 417.781.6300 to schedule an appointment for a FREE day of initial services.
In addition, existing Carlson Chiropractic Center patients are also invited to take part in the Food Drive, and for a donation of 10 canned goods or non-perishable items, they can receive a FREE extra adjustment on Saturday, November 5, from 8:30-11 am. All food items collected throughout the drive will be donated to the Salvation Army.
“Together we can make a difference in the needs that our community is facing this Holiday Season,” Dr. Carlson added. “We need to make sure that we do all that we can to help our community, our friends and neighbors, and most importantly, the children.”

Carlson Chiropractic Center Offers Healthy Alternative To Medications As Side Effects For Prescription Drugs Skyrocket
In response to a study released this summer in the Archives of Internal Medicine, which reports that lists of the side effects for prescription medications on drug labels is rising rapidly, the team at Carlson Chiropractic Center wants to remind people that chiropractic is alternative approach to many of the conditions people generally take medications for. In fact, Carlson Chiropractic prides itself on showing their patients the natural way to better health without resulting to the use of medications such as Zoloft, Lyrica, Chantex, and Alli.
Cautions about side effects were designed to inform doctors and consumers of potential hazards, but this expansion may have more to do with worries about litigation rather than actual health concerns, say the study authors, who argue the information could be presented much more efficiently. An analysis of more than 5,600 drug labels and more than 500,000 side effects found that prescription drug labels include an average of 70 different potential adverse reactions -- a number that jumps to 100 side effects for some commonly prescribed drugs. Some drugs in the upper range even listed up to 525 reactions. Study authors pointed out that the large number of side effects listed could overload doctors who must sift through this information in order to make informed decisions about medications on behalf of their patients.
Since one of the primary goals of chiropractic is to relieve pain and improve physical function, and the profession is dedicated to the non-surgical treatment of disorders of the nervous system and/or musculoskeletal system, Dr. Steven M. Carlson feels very strongly that his patients can achieve wellness without resorting to prescription medications or run into issues with any of the thousands of potential side effects. “Every day we show our patients the natural way to better health without resorting to the use of medications,” he said.
“Chiropractic care known for its effectiveness in treating a multitude of issues, including pain throughout the body, and is proven natural alternative,” Carlson added. “And we are convinced that after one visit our patients can see for themselves why chiropractic is the safe and effective alternative.”

Carlson Chiropractic Center Offers Healthy Alternative To Pain Management As Drug Deaths Now Outnumber Traffic Fatalities in US
Joplin, Missouri – In response to preliminary data recently released by the US Centers for Disease Control citing that drugs exceeded motor vehicle accidents as a cause of death in 2009 and killed at least 37,485 people nationwide, the team at Carlson Chiropractic Center wants to remind people that chiropractic is a strong pain relief alternative. After all, one of the goals of chiropractic is to relieve pain and improve physical function, and the profession is dedicated to the non-surgical treatment of disorders of the nervous system and/or musculoskeletal system.
“We show our patients the natural way to better health without resorting to the use of medications,” Dr. Steven M. Carlson said. “We typically focus on, but are not limited to the care of both mid and lower back pain, neck pain, joint pain in the arms and legs, and headaches, and our patients are getting results, not prescriptions.”
The rising numbers of drug deaths is not due to traditional street drugs, corresponds with doctors prescribing more painkillers and anti-anxiety medications that are potent, highly addictive and especially dangerous when combined with one another or with other drugs or alcohol. Among the most commonly abused are Oxycontin, Vicodin, Xanax and Soma. One relative newcomer to the scene is Fentanyl, a painkiller that comes in the form of patches and lollipops and is 100 times more powerful than morphine.
According to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, the CDC's 2009 statistics are the agency's most current. Drug fatalities more than doubled among teens and young adults between 2000 and 2008, years for which more detailed data are available. Deaths more than tripled among people aged 50 to 69, the Times analysis found. In terms of sheer numbers, the death toll is highest among people in their 40s. Overdose deaths involving prescription painkillers, including Oxycontin and Vicodin, and anti-anxiety drugs such as Valium and Xanax more than tripled between 2000 and 2008.
“Chiropractic is a good option for pain management,” Dr. Carlson added. “We are convinced that after one visit our patients will can see for themselves why chiropractic is the safe and effective alternative.”

Now Offering Treatments With Innovative Impulse® Adjusting Instrument
The team at Carlson Chiropractic Center is pleased to announce that they recently began offering their patients treatments with the innovative Impulse® Adjusting Instruments. The advanced technology was developed to provide controlled treatments to the specific areas a patient may be having trouble with.
The patented and FDA registered device was specifically created to deliver gentle and precise chiropractic adjustments to the joints of the spine and extremities to relieve pain and restore function. The Impulse Adjusting Instrument® is controlled by microcomputer circuitry housed within the device that produces a controlled force that chiropractors can use to treat different areas of the body. Chiropractic adjustments with the Impulse Adjusting Instrument® feel like a light tapping sensation. In most cases the treatment is painless and after the adjustment many patients feel relief of pain and improved mobility.
“I think that this is just another great way that we can serve our patients,” Dr. Steven M. Carlson said. “Impulse adjustments are high-tech, and offer us a way to do very precise and targeted adjustments designed to specifically care for just the right areas.”

Carlson Chiropractic Center Offers Backpack Safety Tips As Kids Head Back to School
Joplin, Missouri – Back to school means for many kids it’s time to pick up their backpacks. The team at Carlson Chiropractic Center wants to share backpack safety tips with local parents and caregivers as well as tips recently released by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA).
Although they’re practical, backpacks are a leading cause of back and shoulder pain for millions of children and adolescents. As a matter of fact, the ACA reports that young children are suffering from back pain much earlier than previous generations, and the use of weighty backpacks is a contributing factor. Heavy packs can cause a child to hyperextend, or arch, his or her back, or lean the head and trunk forward to compensate for the weight of the bag. These postures can stress the muscles in the neck and back, increasing the risk of injury and fatigue. The natural curves in the middle and lower back can become distorted, which can cause irritation to the spine joints and the rib cage. A rounding of the shoulders could also result if a back has to compensate for a heavy load.
“How a child wears a backpack is important in determining how his or her body will be affected by the extra weight. Children should always use both shoulder straps and wear the pack on the back,” Carlson Chiropractic’s Dr. Steven M. Carlson said. “It’s also important to make sure children never carry more than 10 percent of their body weight.”
The ACA urges parents to keep the following in mind:
- Size - The backpack should never be wider or longer than a child’s torso, and the pack should not hang more than 4 inches below the waistline.
- Straps - The backpack should have two wide, padded shoulder straps so it won’t place unnecessary pressure on the neck and shoulder muscles.
- Use - Make sure your child uses both straps. Lugging a heavy backpack by one strap can cause a disproportionate shift of weight to one side, leading to neck and muscle spasms, low-back pain, and poor posture.
- Adjustability - The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child’s body.
- Padding - Make sure the backpack has a padded back, which not only provides increased comfort, but also protects a child from being poked by sharp edges inside the pack.
- Compartments - A backpack with individualized compartments helps position the contents most effectively. Make sure that pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on your child's back, and try to place the heaviest items closet to the body.
In addition, parents should ask their children to report any pain or other problems resulting from carrying a backpack. If the pain is severe or persistent, Carlson Chiropractic urges them to seek care from a doctor of chiropractic or other health care professional.

Carlson Chiropractic Center Offers Healthy Alternative To National Rise In Back Surgery
In the past few years several studies have failed to show a big advantage for back surgery, especially for complex surgery. According to the American Chiropractic Association, 31 million Americans experience low back pain at any given time, and it is one of the most common reasons for missed work. In fact, back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory infections.
“Essentially chiropractic can relieve problems in the spine that could contribute to injuries or issues that could eventually require surgery,” Carlson Chiropractic’s Dr. Jay Farr said. “If we can address those problems before they get severe, a person might never get to a point where they would require surgery.”
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.
The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, a federal government research organization, recommended that low back pain sufferers choose the most conservative care first. And it recommended spinal manipulation as the only safe and effective, drugless form of initial professional treatment for acute low back problems in adults.
“Chiropractic is a good option for the treatment of back pain,” Dr. Farr added. “Because chiropractic makes it a lot easier to prevent a back problem before it gets started.”
Since 2003 the professionals at Carlson Chiropractic Center have worked with a hands-on approach to health care, committed to bringing each of their patients better health and a better way of life by teaching and practicing the principles of chiropractic wellness care.
